Dumpting Syndrome

v Dumping Syndrome

- Postprandial problem occurs after gastric resection because ingested food rapidly enters the jejunum without proper mixing and without the normal duodenal digestive processing

-

- Often after Billroth II but usually relieved after few months

- Early clinical manifestations: occurs 5-30 minutes after eating

- vertigo, tachycardia, syncope,

- sweating, pallor, palpitation,

- Diarrhea, nausea.

- Late Manifestations: occurs 2-3 hours after eating

- epigastric fullness, distention, discomfort, and abdominal cramping.



- Nursing Management

- high protein, high fat, low carbohydrate, dry diet

- eating in a recumbent or semi-recumbent position

- lying down after meals

- don’t take large fluids with meals.
